This work would not have been possible without him. Also, I would like to sincerely appreciate Dr. Simpkins for his kind and compassionate nature that will always be an inspiration to me. I would like to sincerely thank my committee members Dr. Shaohua Yang and Dr. Nathalie Sumien for their kind support and guidance throughout my thesis work. I am especially grateful to Dr. Sumien for teaching me some of the basic laboratory techniques and giving me moral strength during the difficult times. I would also like to thank Dr. Ladislav Dory for his support and cooperation as my university member. I would like to thank Sue Yi for teaching me and helping me with all the animal procedures in this work. Her guidance has helped me solve many problems in my work. I also want to thank Pil Kim for teaching me some of the basic laboratory procedures and for offering me a helping hand whenever I needed. I wish to thank all the members and staff of Dr. Simpkins laboratory and all my friends at UNTHSC for providing me a friendly environment to work in. Lastly, but most importantly, I would like to thank my beloved husband Kranti for his support and encouragement that enabled me to complete this thesis. Finally, I have to thank my parents for their unconditional love and support in everything I do.

17 beta-estradiol modulates GABAergic synaptic transmission and tonic currents during development in vitro.

Estrogens exert a variety of modulatory effects on the structure and function of the nervous system. In particular, 17 beta-estradiol was found to affect GABAergic inhibition in adult animals but its action on GABAergic currents during development has not been elucidated. In the present study, we investigated the effect of 17 beta-estradiol on hippocampal neurons developing in vitro. In this mo...

17-beta-estradiol upregulates the stress response in Candida albicans: implications for microbial virulence.

OBJECTIVE The influence of 17-beta-estradiol on the stress response of Candida albicans was studied. METHODS The survival of clinical isolates of C. albicans treated with 17-beta-estradiol after heat and oxidative stress was measured by viable plate counts. Cellular proteins were analyzed via SDS-PAGE. RESULTS The heat stress response induced by 17-beta-estradiol in C. albicans grown at 25 ...

The Presence of 17 Beta-Estradiol in the Environment: Health Effects and Increasing Environmental Concerns

Endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) as active biological compounds can pose a threat to the environment through acute and chronic toxicity in organisms, accumulation in the ecosystem, and loss of habitats and biodiversity. They also have a range of possible adverse effects on environmental...

Role of the AMPA receptors of paragigantocellularis lateralis nucleus in the inflammatory pain modulation in male rat

Introduction: The 17β-estradiol acts as a neurosteroid in the brain and modulates nociception by binding to the estrogen receptors and also by allosteric interaction with other membrane-bound receptors like glutamate receptors. Paragigantocellularis lateralis nucleus (LPGi) is one of the important brain regions implicated in the pain modulation. So, this study was designed to evaluate the ...

Changes in beta 1 and beta 2 integrin genes expression in rat lumbar spinal cord is supportive of the inhibitory effect of chronic pain on the development of tolerance to morphine analgesia

Introduction: In order to study the alterations of beta 1 and 2 integrins mRNA level in rat lumbar spinal cord following the induction of chronic pain and its effect on the development of tolerance to morphine analgesia, we examined the level of expression of these genes in the presence of chronic pain, which is an inhibitor of morphine tolerance. We used induction of chronic pain alone and ...
